Government using its websites to defend emergency

November 11th, 2007 Editor 1 · 2 Comments

ISLAMABAD: In order to justify Musharraf’s decision to impose emergency, the federal government has started using official websites for criticizing the role of the judiciary under the deposed judges and role of the media, holding them responsible for creation of this difficult situation. The latest posting from investors’ relation desk of the debt office of the Ministry of Finance on the official website is aimed at apprising hundreds of international investors of the causes that led to the imposition of emergency and suspension of the Constitution of Pakistan.

It states that the superior judiciary had paralysed various organs of the state (executives and legislatives) and created impediments in the fight against terrorism, which led to the imposition of emergency.

It said Pakistan was facing challenges because of certain decisions of the superior judiciary paralysing the vital pillars of the state, which were not at all conducive to running the state as well as the economy.

“Media, on the other hand, did not help in stabilizing situation either,” it said and added that in some cases they seemed to be helping the cause of extremists and terrorists by showing the gory scenes of suicide bombings that encouraged these elements to carry on with their heinous acts.

It is in this background, it states, the government took the ‘difficult decision’ of imposing emergency in the national interest for ensuring effective governance, maintaining the writ of the government, improving law and order and security situation and averting the weakening of economic fundamentals.

“Since the government is fully functional at all tiers there is no danger of derailment of the ongoing economic policies and reform agenda,” it states.

Lame excuses, that’s pretty much all I can say. Judiciary creating impediments in the fight against terrorism? Give me a break. Not that Justice Chaudhry is any angel but at least give us excuses that sound plausible.
