LAHORE: Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto said Thursday that Pervez Musharraf would be unacceptable as president even if he shed his army uniform.
In comments that appeared to cement her break with Musharraf following his imposition of emergency rule, she said too many promises had been broken for her to work with him.
The military ruler has vowed to quit as army chief as soon as the Supreme Court validates his October 6 re-election so he can swear the oath of office for a second term as a civilian.
Pakistan’s attorney general Malik Mohammad Qayyum said earlier that would happen before December 1.
But Bhutto, who is under house arrest, said while talking to local media in an interview that it was too late.
Asked if Musharraf would be unacceptable as a civilian president, Bhutto replied: “That’s right. Too much water has gone under the bridge.”
She said Musharraf was not the problem himself. “The problem is the team he has put around him. The problem is the inability to cut the umbilical cord with a certain group of people.”
He made “too many broken promises, too many broken commitments,” she said adding, “We have said very clearly that we cannot keep doors open when commitments are broken.”
