  i loved the pictures…we have lost a great leader this year.the space cannot be filled by any leader ever..i was a big admirer of her courage,boldness,confidence,leadership and the her entire personality.

  I disagree. I feel the hype of her as a one and only potential leader of pakistan is one that was and is still is coming from the west. It is also highly ridiculous to claim this when accusations of theiving 1.5 billion rupees were still pending; and also when the 72′ constitution did not allow third-term prime ministers and yet she was vigirously pushing for that amendment via a military dictatorship…….

  Although I did and will oppose Bhutto/PPP’s politically, it was STILL WRONG to murder BB. I feel shocked and numb. No, she was not a ray of light for me, but she was a person, a mother and a citizen of Pakistan. Her senseless and brutal death should send shockwaves through all of us. Murder is murder. There should be no excuse for resorting to such tactics.

  My condolences for Bhutto’s family and well wishers.

  i think she was a great leader.she always fight to proove her father’s innocence and fight at every stage for him.she was a true daughter and a true politician.i think by the comeback of her to pakistan was going to be very special and she surely was going to take some serious steps in the betterment of pakistan.i dont no about the politics and not even like benazir shaheed but after her death i feel very bad for her and started amiring her alot and also developed interst in politics.may god be pleased with him and i realy want to see her son bilawal doing something for her mother by taking and standing on the seat of her mother.

  do any of you people live in Pakistan? Do you realize that the chaos/3 days of no way to feed families/ destruction is happening in Pakistan right now NOT because Bhutto is dead or that anyone is upset that she’s dead, but because people feel incredibly insecure. This would be the reaction if someone like Musharraf was assainated as well. It’s about feeling insecure. It’s about Pakistan’s broken border. Just because you say the word terrorism in every speech you give doesn’t mean you get it. Just because you say democracy 20 times within 60 seconds doesn’t mean you get it. The only reason she came back into the country was because of western backing, not because anyone but her party actually wanted her there. And I agree with Maria completely. Everyone, whether you like her or dislike her should be disgusted by her death. But anyone who thinks the masses in Pakistan miss her, or think that she was the only one who could bring them democracy or even capable of bringing them democracy, is incredibly naive. Pakistani’s are smart. And Pakistani’s don’t forget. This woman was not the ‘Rosa Parks’ figure that people in the West or the PPP make her out to be. She was a elitist, from a feudalistic background, who wanted revenge. And she got it. She sucked the country dry. Do a simple wikipedia search. Read something. Filling your head with propaganda will never benefit anyone.

  What constitutes a great leader? A leader is defined by their actions.Benazir is widely recognized as a looter and plunderer of the national treasury.Stashing away millions in swiss bank accounts, accused of nepotisim and indirectly orchestrating the murder of her brother.The list of wrong doings to her credit is endless. However, she was a human being, someones daughter, wife and mother.No one deserves to die like she did.It is an insult to humanity and to the institution of human relationships. She leaves behind a grieving family and a grieving nation.For people like me who are judicious and have been blessed with the tool of common sensical judgment, her death is not the the death of democracy.It is rather the end of an era which could have been much more productive and beneficial for this country.Sadly , it wasn’t ever.

  I was Shocked at the news of her murder but I was also shocked to know that one who claims to be champion of democracy will take such an undemocratic step to appoint her husband as chairman of her party. Infact I do not think that she will do this thing willingly.This is either forcd upon her or her will is fake and forcd upon her. She very well knew her husband past and why is it that her hus band has refused to show the will in public.   hi, i just dont understand, why some people thinks that the loss of Benazir is the sad news for just and just Sindis, why for Sindis, becs BIBI was sindi selv. I think every body from whole of the world was shocked over this , what happend to Late Mrs Bhutto, and why this happend to her. v all r barabar ke sharik is dukh mein. not only becus she was the leader of ppp , as a normal person also she was not deserve to die like this, as a commen person she was the mother of 3 children also, and they need her.   Her country’s better off without her. She may serve Pakistan better after her death than she did in life. We need have no sympathy with her Islamist assassin and the extremists behind him to recognize that Bhutto was corrupt, divisive, dishonest and utterly devoid of genuine concern for her country.

  She was a splendid con, persuading otherwise cynical Western politicians and ‘hardheaded’ journalists that she was not only a brave woman crusading in the Islamic wilderness, but also a thoroughbred democrat.

  In fact, Bhutto was a frivolously wealthy feudal landlord amid bleak poverty. The scion of a thieving political dynasty, she was always more concerned with power than with the wellbeing of the average Pakistani. Her program remained one of old-school patronage, not increased productivity or social decency.

  Educated in expensive Western schools, she permitted Pakistan’s feeble education system to rot - opening the door to Islamists and their religious schools.

  During her years as prime minister, Pakistan went backward, not forward. Her husband looted shamelessly and ended up fleeing the country, pursued by the courts. The Islamist threat - which she artfully played both ways - spread like cancer.

  But she always knew how to work Westerners - unlike the hapless Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who sought the best for his tormented country but never knew how to package himself.

  Military regimes are never appealing to Western sensibilities. Yet, there are desperate hours when they provide the only, slim hope for a country nearing collapse. Democracy is certainly preferable - but, unfortunately, it’s not always immediately possible. Like spoiled children, we have to have it now - and damn the consequences.

  In Pakistan, the military has its own forms of graft; nonetheless, it remains the least corrupt institution in the country and the only force holding an unnatural state together. In Pakistan back in the ’90s, the only people I met who cared a whit about the common man were military officers.
  Americans don’t like to hear that. But it’s the truth.

  Bhutto embodied the flaws in Pakistan’s political system, not its potential salvation. Both she and her principal rival, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, failed to offer a practical vision for the future - their political feuds were simply about who would divvy up the spoils.

  From its founding, Pakistan has been plagued by cults of personality, by personal, feudal loyalties that stymied the development of healthy government institutions (provoking coups by a disgusted military). When she held the reins of government, Bhutto did nothing to steer in a new direction - she merely sought to enhance her personal power.

  Now she’s dead. And she may finally render her country a genuine service (if cynical party hacks don’t try to blame Musharraf for their own benefit). After the inevitable rioting subsides and the spectacular conspiracy theories cool a bit, her murder may galvanize Pakistanis against the Islamist extremists who’ve never gained great support among voters, but who nonetheless threaten the state’s ability to govern.

  As a victim of fanaticism, Bhutto may shine as a rallying symbol with a far purer light than she cast while alive. The bitter joke is that, while she was never serious about freedom, women’s rights and fighting terrorism, the terrorists took her rhetoric seriously - and killed her for her words, not her actions.

  Nothing’s going to make Pakistan’s political crisis disappear - this crisis may be permanent, subject only to intermittent amelioration. (Our State Department’s policy toward Islamabad amounts to a pocket full of platitudes, nostalgia for the 20th century and a liberal version of the white man’s burden mindset.)

  The one slim hope is that this savage murder will - in the long term - clarify their lot for Pakistan’s citizens. The old ways, the old personalities and old parties have failed them catastrophically. The country needs new leaders - who don’t think an election victory entitles them to grab what little remains of the national patrimony.

  In killing Bhutto, the Islamists over-reached (possibly aided by rogue elements in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, one of the murkiest outfits on this earth). Just as al Qaeda in Iraq overplayed its hand and alienated that country’s Sunni Arabs, this assassination may disillusion Pakistanis who lent half an ear to Islamist rhetoric.

  A creature of insatiable ambition, Bhutto will now become a martyr. In death, she may pay back some of the enormous debt she owes her country.

  Benazir Bhutto Shaheed’s The “will” Pros & Cons:

  I have thoroughly examined the text, style, flow and pen strokes of MBB’s hand written “Will” and certify to the best of my knowledge, experience and belief that it is a true and factual hand writing of MBB and there is no forgery or fabrication as some have voiced such concerns. I do not appreciate Chaudhry Pervez Ellahi’s slogan that PPP – stood for “Property, Plunder and Palaces” but it says volumes as how MBB’s “Will” will have bearing on the PPP’s future. MBB’s “Will” dated October 16, 2007 signed by Benazir Bhutto is legit, genuine and real document. It is no fake.

  There is no doubt in my mind that MBB was a staunch believer in democracy, rule of law and supremacy of constitution. She struggled all her life till her last breath for freedom and democracy. She was true peoples princess, she loves people and people loves her. The question arises why she did not want to leave a legacy by installing a democratic process starting with her own party and making a healthy precedent for other parties to follow her lead. Why she wanted dynasty politics to remain in her party even after her death.

  Her husband Asif Ali Zardari though not a politician but did make tremendous sacrifices plus 11 ½ prison and all sorts of hardship without compromising with the rulers. He certainly deserves respect and conspicuous position in the party but not heading the largest grass root political party –PPP in Pakistan.

  Even if no elected head of PPP, at least MBB should have nominated or chosen as her successor one of the top leaders like,…Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Jehangir Badar or Aitezaz Ahsan to lead her party. It was expected from MBB’s stature and vision that she will not make PPP a family corporation run by family board of directors.

  By appointing Mr. Asif Ali Zardari as her successor she has provided opportunity to her critics that those harping for democracy must first bring democratic institutions into their own political parties and this “will” is a testimonial of dynastic feudal mentality.

  MBB’s critics maintain, the “Will” displays a total misunderstanding of the feelings of the people of Pakistan and members of PPP. Designating Mr. Zardari as her successor is the height of absence of political acumen. Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was hated by the army but Mr. Zardari is despised by the entire nation.

  There is tremendous responsibility on the shoulders of Mr. Asif Ali Zardari leading the largest political party of Pakistan and continuation of MBB’s vision and legacy. It seems quite difficult for Mr. Zardari to fit in the shoes of MBB and keep her charisma lit and alive. It will be in the best interest of the party that Mr. Zardari remain there as a figure head and let Mr. Amin Fahim, Jehangir Badar or Aitezaz Ahsan and others lead the party equipped with decision making authority without seeking permission from Mr. Zardari. Now the Question arises as is how to save PPP and how to continue with MBB’s legacy and vision. The author is not a member or affiliate of PPP but a fan of MBB and well wisher of PPP.
