Democracy is best revenge: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

LARKANA: Bilawal in his first ever press conference as the Chairman of the party thanked the CEC members and said that he remained committed to the federation of Pakistan.

“Democracy is best revenge,” Bilawal said and added that the PPP would work with a “renewed vigour”.

The 19-year-old son of slain former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, on Sunday was elected as the Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) by the members of the Central Executive Committee of the party at a meeting which was held at Bhutto’s parental Naudero House in Larkana.

Senior Vice-Chairman of the party Makhdoom Amin Fahim, who presided over Sunday’s meeting, announced this at a press conference after the marathon meeting that went for over five hours.

Fahim said that during the meeting Bilawal read out his mother’s will that was signed on October 16, two days before she returned to Pakistan ending her self-exile.

“In the will, Benazir had stated that if she dies then her husband Asif Ali Zardari would lead the party, but during today’s meeting Zardari said that he would not take the responsibility and offered the post to his son Bilawal, which was endorsed by everyone,” Fahim told reporters.

Later in the press conference Zardari, who has been appointed as the co-chairman of the party, said, “Benazir ki tasveer Bilawal (Benazir’s image is Bilawal),” that led to party workers shout slogans in praise of Benazir and her son Bilawal.

The party constitution, however, states that the Chairman of the party must be at least 22 years old.

Earlier in the day, PPP spokesperson Sherry Rehman had said that Bilawal is not keen to take up the post and wants to pursue his studies at the Oxford University.

I mean does the the PPP have any kind of brain power or credibility within them? If their own constitution is of no importance to them then why expect more when they come into power? They are just as less respectful about rules and procedure than Musharraf. Bilawal is 19 and the party chairperson has to be 22 at least. But apparently they don’t care. I mean emotions cannot be used as an excuse. Otherwise we should excuse the billion-ruppee damage the country has faced in the past 2 days by otherwise ‘emotional’ hooligans.

    Dear Bilawal,

If democracy is the best revenge, then why is PPP the only major party still interested in participating in a sham elections under an illegal president. First the constitution was kicked out; then the judicary; then the emergency apparently the illegal govt’s illusion of the constitution was kicked out the second time (????!!!!).
Your mother (RIP) was allowed in the country by forgiving of corrupt charges by an illegal president. Why were those charges not cleared in the legal, proper way? You have the best lawyer of the country in your party but these charges were not made to go away legally. Why not?
So, democracy is the best revenge? On who? The people of Pakistan?
Why should your family have one set of rules and the rest of the common person have another?
PPP talks about democracy and nothing about the dismissed judiciary. Elections are not conducive in providing democracy unless there is check and balance after democracy - which will be absent because the judiciary is now hand-picked.

I request everyone reading to think about these facts.

Maria! They were not PPP followers who are causing Loot and damage in our country. I have personally seen Pathans and MQM followers taking advantage of these days. They broke my car glass too and took all our money. They were MQM guys who are even creating troubles for local citizens.

Secondly beside criticizing I request you to go through the press conference by PPP declaring Bilawal as future chairperson. Bilawal is not staying here to continue politics at this age. He will go abroad to complete his studies and till then Mr. Makhdoon Ameen Faheem and somewhat Mr. Zardari would lead the party activities.

And you spoke about emotional decision. True leaders and his followers are always emotional but it is even then not effecting our decision. Shaheed Benazir saw Bilawal as a right choice and she was an intelligent lady. We believe in her decision. There must be something in him that made Mohtarma think this way.

When Benazir was almost if same age of Bilawal, She used was predicted to be future prime minister by a famous Indian politician. Intelligence is what which is counted not the age. Well I hope you heard about that child who was Hafiz-e-Quran when before he turned 10-year old. He was declared PhD by a committee after a panel discussion and oral examination. Well I just want to say that you should gather somewhat evidence and relative info before criticizing anyone.

Constitution and judiciary is not kicked by PPP, it is kicked by Musharraf since many years. Well Bilawal is not taking part in elections. He’ll complete his studies. Rest decisions are not taken yet. Please be fully aware of circumstances before pointing on anyone. You are not more sensible than other PPP representative. They have authority to think and do as directed so you don’t need to worry.

And Maria! Before talking about judiciary, please learn how to spell judiciary as you misspelled it.

Hellow! You say that democracy is the best revenge. How you can say this because you are not applying this rule even making decisions about your party.PPP is not owned by Bhutto family. You people think so, you are the chairman of PPP elections are overhand you are not eligible to takepart you are not conducting the compain you cannot speak urdu you have no experience of public dealing then how can you fulfil your duties.

  • 6 Sanam Mukhtar // Jan 7, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Well Maryam, this is not the case actually. He is not taking part in elections and will complete his studies first. Till then, Makhdoom Ameen Faheem will be looking after PPP. Well people have decided to check the fresh blood as well. I think he would be the right choice.

And PPP is not owned by Bhutto family that is the reason BILWAL IS MADE CHAIRMAN and not Jn. Zulfiqar Bhutto. Bilawal represents Zardari family while Jn. Zulfiqar Bhutto represents Bhutto family but the thing is all PPP representatives have decided to make him their future chairman and followers are also excited and happy then I think he should also be given a chance.. I perceive it better than militants.

PPP always looted Pakistan and they will do it again and again. Very soon Pakistan will lead the whole world in CORRUPTION, because Mr. ZARDARI is back in full action. They lure innocent Pakistanis in the name of so called DEMOCRACY under ppp umbrella.

I am writing to thank you for the good wishes sent on the occasion of my son Bilawal’s birthday.

This is a time of great joy for me. The little boy born during the election campaign of 1988 turns nineteen this year and goes to University. As I prepare to return to Pakistan for election, and an uncertain future, given the fight between the dictatorship and democracy, I am strengthened knowing the children are grown up and can take care of themselves.

Inshallah with your prayers, the victory will belong to the people.

I pray for you and your family and thank you once again for your message on Bilawal’s birthday.

Please continue to remember us in your prayers.

    Bibi
