SCBA to review PBC decision on PCO judges boycott

The division of legal fraternity across the country over the decision of Pakistan Bar Council’s (PBC) limiting its boycott of the superior courts on every Thursday forced the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) to call its meeting next week to review the decision.

The PBC last week ended its complete boycott of the superior courts and limited it only to Thursday and one hour daily boycott of the PCO judges keeping in view the hardships being faced by the litigants.

“We are going to call first meeting of the Association next week to analyze the situation and resentment prevailing among lawyers across the country in lieu of the PBC decision,” SCBA Secretary Chaudhry Amin Javed told The News on Saturday.

He said that after convening the meeting of SCBA, we would call the National Lawyers’ Action Committee (NLAC) meeting wherein consensus would be reached to review the decision, taken by the Pakistan Bar Council.

The SCBA secretary disclosed that though the PBC had held its meeting in Peshawar last Sunday and later the National Lawyers Action Committee meeting was also held on the same day, but the PBC decision on limiting boycott of the superior courts was taken the next day and not during the meeting of the National Lawyers Action Committee which is a representative of lawyers and important body of SCBA.

To a question, he said that despite of their repeated attempts to the provincial government, they were not allowed to meet SCBA President Aitzaz Ahsan, who has been detained at his residence in Lahore since the imposition of the state of emergency on November 3.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PBC decision has sparked resentment among lawyers across the country, and they rejected the decision, pledging to continue their boycott till the reinstatement of all the judges of superior courts who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) 2007.

Bar associations across the country have rejected the decision of PBC and have demanded for reviewing the boycott of superior courts within three days.
