Lyceum student wins Qatar design competition

KARACHI: The Lyceum School’s Mahwish Rizvi has won first place from Pakistan in the Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar 2008 Design Competition followed by Sabika Jamal from the Beacon House School System and in third place Tabassum Wazir from the D.A. Public School O/A Levels.

At a press briefing Monday, the VCUQatar announced the winners of the first phase of the 2008 design competition held every year in the Middle East for all high school students in Qatar, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Turkey and now for the second time in Pakistan.

“The Formula for Success” was the theme for this year’s competition. A great number of students from Pakistan participated in this competition with immense confidence and enthusiasm, a press release said. The judging was conducted at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQ) on February 17, 2008 where winning entries were judged by a world-class jury comprising representatives from the Qatari Ministry of Education, the Arts Faculty of VCUQatar, DHL as well as other VCUQatar officials including the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr Charles Bleick and Director of Marketing and Public Relations Moamer Qazafi.

Three semi-finalists were chosen from each country and they are now entitled to receive cash prizes of $1,200 for first place, $800 for second place and $600 for third place. The three winners from each country will now move on in to the second phase of the competition in which two, full four-year scholarships to attend VCUQatar will be won by the two finalists. The scholarships for creativity to attend VCUQatar are provided by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned. VCUQatar Students can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic, fashion and interior design.
