Dr Riaz — a member of International Socialists Pakistan (ISPak) and a professor at the University of Karachi (KU) — was severely beaten up an hour ago by Rangers personnel at KU.
There was tension throughout the day at Karachi University and all the gates were locked. The Rangers were seen to be in hiding as usual. By 05:00 p.m. Dr Riaz decided to leave for home. He reached the main (silver jubilee) gate of the university, and told the Rangers personnel there to open the gate so that he may leave. He’s a teacher and has the right to get gates opened. The Rangers personnel got abusive, pulled Dr Riaz out of the car, and started beating him up with the butts of their rifles and sticks. They kicked him with their boots as well. Please note that Dr Riaz was absolutely unarmed.
Students who tried to protect Dr Riaz bled as well, reportedly. He’s in bad shape right now. I’ll post updates as soon as I receive them.
Moreover, we condemn the treatment meted out to Dr Riaz, and demand a full-scale inquiry into the incident. Dr Riaz is a respected activist, and is a comrade of ours. We stand by him and his family. We will not watch silently while our friends are attacked so brutally for no reason whatsoever.

this news should be in print & tv media; a country cannot progress if it doesn’t respect the teachers…

Rangers as well as security guards in KU are absolutely USELESS!
they’re just getting paid for sitting and harrasing common people.
I remember, the days of the G-17 incident when the clash was happening, entrance of vehicles was prohibitited from silver jubilee, but wow! the party guys with sticks were freely using the gate, and the common public, students & teachers were not allowed!
Another thing which happened a few weeks ago, CELL PHONES OF A LARGE NUMBER OF EVENING STUDENTS WERE SNATCHED NEAR SILVER JUBILEE GATE, “INSIDE KU”!
and there was not a single rangers personell present nearby~~!
and a couple of months ago, during the B.Com exams, a bike hit a girl and the guys ran away! No one to catch em!
i think the university would be much safe and peaceful WITHOUT these guys!
I recommend replacement of the complete security and rangers staff in KU,as the present one’s are used to with “Haraam Khori” & “Dada Geeri to innocents only” now….

The news is on air and print. I saw in the Dawn yesterday that the University of Karachi teachers society is demanding a judicial inquiry into the shameful incident. It is so typical of the rangers to change their statement after it is being recorded and aired!

So they have resorted to falsehoods about the thrashing of the University of Karachi staff members. I mean the recent news article in the Daily Dawn. Next the rangers will say that the poor professor was day dreaming nothing happened. These people can get away with anything.

I don’t understand why they need those stupid guys in uniform to mentain LAW and ORDER in the university. After all, police, rangers and army are not capable of maintaining law in the country. They just know how to earn some respect from ordinary people by beating ‘em.
