Islamabad, April 12: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has a “very limited” political role for the future, a top cleric said. National Assembly member Maulana Fazlur Rahman said that President Musharraf is standing on frail grounds “but until now his impeachment is not under consideration”.
Talking to this newspaper, Mr Rahman, whose Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazal) is part of the ruling coalition, said that Parliament should be strengthened instead of expecting anything better from the presidency.
“The constitutional position as on October 12, 1999 should be revived and not that of November 3 (2007),” he added. He said that restoration of the judiciary will end unrest in Pakistan. “The unity of the political parties was a solid step but conspiracies were still being hatched against some political parties to damage the democratic process,” he said.
Restricting the Army’s role in the national affairs was an important issue with all political parties and they would work together to reach on conclusion, he said. The JUI(F) leader said that the assault on former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and former federal minister Sher Afgan Niazi were highly condemnable. Expressing his views on the torture of politicians, he said the lawyers are representatives of the law and “it is sad to see them breaking it”.
