Dutch embassy in Pakistan shifted to hotel after anti-Quran film raises security fears

The Netherlands has shifted its embassy in the Pakistani capital to a luxury hotel because of security worries following the release of a film criticizing Islam.

The film by right-wing Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders has triggered street protests in Pakistan and other Muslim countries and calls for a boycott of Dutch goods.

Embassy spokeswoman Mirjam Krijnen said Thursday that the Dutch Embassy and its staff have “a different profile” because of the film and want to avoid taking any risks. She wouldn’t say if the embassy has received any concrete threats.

Krijnen said officials are looking at how to tighten security around the vacated embassy building so that staff can return

    Universal Children Day with Earthquake affected Children in Pakistan

    Morning of October 29, 2008 brought a horror, tragedy and sorrows for the children of Balochistan, Southwestern State of Pakistan. Three to four districts have been affected but district Ziarat has been the worst among the others.

    District Ziarat is the coldest city in the state of Balochistan. Women and children are living their nights under the sub-zero temperature. The government, NGOs and Pakistan army has provided possible relief to the affected people.

    People are living under the sky in freezing nights. After shocks have created more problems for the people especially for the women and children. The children and women are in a traumatic situation. They have lost their belongings, houses dear and near ones.

    The meteorological department has forecasted that in coming weeks the temperature shall be 5 to 6 centigrade. The women folks and children has been facing shortage of food, shelter, water and the schools have also been demolished. For having no activity for the children they have become irritated and silent.

    Children have got diseases like, pneumonia, chest infections, dysentery etc. Lack of proper care, medication and food has even worsened their condition. In these circumstances there is need to share the joy, happiness with the trauma affected children of District Ziarat.

    Ravi Foundation Trust-Pakistan (a non-profit organization) has been working for the children, youth, women and animals rights since May 2005. (Ravi is based in Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh and Tandlianwala. It had worked in 2005 for the earthquake affected people in northern areas of Pakistan. It has worked with Operation Blessings, International and other programs with Friends of Children Australia, Urban Institute, Fazaldad Human Rights, Institute, and Centre for Civic Education.

    Rural Educational Development and Welfare Organization (REDWO) is based in District Lorali, Balochistan has been working for development of all segments of society. They have done different projects with UNDP, SPO, TVO, South Asia Pakistan, World Bank, Pakistan Batumal and Ministry of Youth affairs.

    Ravi-Foundation and REDWO have designed a plan to mark universal children day with earthquake affected children of District Ziarat, Balochistan, Pakistan.

    Children Day with Trauma affected Children of District, Ziarat.

    • Children Festival in the city of district Ziarat. (About 500 children and parents shall take part. 100 other men and women from different walks of life shall take part.
    • Affected children from affected areas shall be brought in buses to the place with their mothers and fathers.
    • Each child shall be given a piece of paper and with a color pencil and shall be asked to draw anything. The idea is to give children of affected area a chance to express themselves while drawing.
    • Local children games shall be organized.
    • A theatre shall be performed on Child Rights.
    • Child Rights leaflets shall be distributed among the people.
    • Magic show shall be presented to make children happy.
    • A children rally shall be organized at the end of program.

    Opinion makers, district Nazim, education department, social activists and local political leaders shall be invited. A Children committee shall be formed to further plan the activities and programs for the children and women in the areas.

    The activity shall make people aware about the rights of children. It will also give an inspiration to local government and officials, social activists to organize more programs for the children.
