This post is to clarify any confusion or misinformation spread regarding the demise of a Luminite, Hashir Munawer Hussain. First of all, people need to stop speculating the reasons that led to Hashir’s death. A memorial service took place at LUMS this evening where his friends clarified a few rumours regarding Hashir’s death. He was not an unhappy person, he was caring and was the sort of person who brought people together. He was not under stress due to his GPA and he did not face any pressure from his parents. We cannot be certain as to what led to his death and speculations will only cause more pain, they cannot bring Hashir back.
Kamaluddin Ahmed, an instructor at LUMS, urged the students to pray for Hashir and his family for Allah to give them strength during these difficult times.

Yes, Hashir was one of the most happy people I have known. And there was never any pressure on him from his parents. And something should be done about this false publicity in the media.
Rest in Peace

I didnt know Hashir personally but what I saw of him everyday, I can tell that he was a very happy, fun loving person. Always smiling, always happy. He had the best group of freinds in our batch and he was loved by his family and freinds. Please I request everyone to stop discussing the reasons behind this tragic incident, and rather pray for his soul. May Allah bless him with eternal peace. AMEN!!

I dont know what the reason for Hashirs death is, I dint know him or anything. But the fact remains that people are under a lot of stress at LUMS they are having break downs. So they want to teach the students how things are in the real world, but lives are more important. You dont have to be a genius and asking this of people is cruel to say the least!!

I think whatever happened to Hashir, why he committed suicide, it is our very personal matter- being a LUMS community. There is pressure of studying on everyone. He couldn’t take it. But we don’t exactly know what was going on his mind which led to his decision of self destruction. So I would appreciate if media takes a constructive role in educating people, not to take such steps as this leads to a greater pain for parents and associated ones. We all pray that Allah forgive his sins, rest him in peace and give his family sabr-e-jameel to live with this tragedy.

Hashir passed out through st. Patrick’s High O and A’levels…HIs old principal Mrs. Henderson remembers him and grieves this sad loss. It is now time for us educationists to put our heads together and try to find out why we refuse to let all our students flourish, without the PAss/fail threat hanging over them. The obsession with A grades, GPA/CGPAs must always be sustained for we fear without it educationn in Pakistan will fall even further….perhaps our fellow Japanese educationists could help us overcome this terrible impasse, so that we can all say that Hashir Munawer’s passing was not in vain! I didnt now Hashir, but he is like a brother….nevermore, nevermore, O God almighty, nevermore!

Is it true that his father was a military man, a brigadier perhaps?

yes, his father is a retired army man but I don’t see how it is relevant to incident.

I think you’ve totally misunderstood me Will. My point was that these are young impressionable minds learning to handle freedom and sometimes it gets out of control. But that is the very experience LUMS offers. Do not get me wrong that there is something “THEIR” water - its also my University and that was the whole point. That its not always the policies that should be blamed sometimes individuals need to go through their own course of making mistakes to learn to differentiate between right and wrong.
