Essay Writing Competition on Democracy

               Democracy and Democratic Citizenship Essay Contest

The Centre for Civic Education Pakistan has announced an essay writing contest for young people to share their perspectives on democracy and democratic citizenship in Pakistan. College and university students between the ages of 18 and 30) are invited to write short essays (under 2000 words) reflecting on their experiences with democracy. This can include their ideals, realities, and what they feel is the future of democracy in Pakistan. This contest is open for students from all over Pakistan.

This essay writing contest is part of the Centre’s proposed Democracy Festival to be held on September 15, 2008 to celebrate the first ever World Day for Democracy. The final submissions are due Sunday, May 31, 2008. All submissions must respond to at least one of the following questions:

  • My vision of Pakistan as a democratic society and steps I can take to get there.
  • How I can be an active and effective Pakistani citizen in the age of globalization

The three finalists from each group i.e. college students and university students will receive prizes worth PKR 7,500, PKR. 5,000 and PKR 2,500 respectively and their essays will be included in a special publication. Additionally, the finalists will also receive a scholarship to participate in the “National Conference on Civic Education for a Democratic Pakistan” that will take place in Islamabad on September 15, 2008.

All essays will be reviewed by the Working Group members of the Democracy Festival.

Essay Details

Deadline: May 31, 2008.

Essays must be submitted in English or Urdu and must not exceed 2000 words. Email completed essays to contact@civiceducation.org. or mail it on GPO box 1123, Islamabad. Please include your full name, birthday, contact information (mailing address, email address, and phone number), and name of educational institution.

    To some extent, I agree with “raat ki rani”. This is a lot of ‘bakwaas’ - more of a diversionary tactic rather than a serious competition.

    In a genuine event, the topic I would like to see covered is ‘Honesty and Fairness in Governmental Institutions’.
