Literacy rate in Pakistan

illiteracy.gifLiteracy is the heart and life blood of development. Without it, Pakistan will remain an impoverished and a weak Third World country. If education does not prevail, the problems of Pakistan will reach at a stage which will make this country very vulnerable.

Stastically, Pakistan has made reasonable march since independence in many fields including education. Less than one million students were enrolled in schools at the time of independence, and, astonishingly, 12 million school- age children are enrolled. But more than 12 million children are doing job, putting their lives in danger and missing quality education. As a matter of fact, full enrollment at primary education is still not a reality, but a dream. The recent census tallies in China and India show that Pakistan is substantially behind the two large Asian nations. China’s literacy rate is near 90% and India has reached 65%. Pakistanis around 50 %, this means we need to do better. Moreover, it’s a moment of shame too, because we have lesser population and are not as huge as China and India.
If we look provincially on terms of education, NWFP, Baluchistan and Sindh was very much backward at the time of its formation. By now many universities are opened in these three states but sadly women literacy is still less than 30% in these provinces. The resources Punjab were enough to make the province 100 %, but feudal, bureaucratic and political forces did use the resources appropriately. Efforts from Pervaiz Elahi, ‘Parha Likha Punjab’ did not work out as there was lack of commitment while the MMA government effort in NWFP managed to increase just 1% of illiteracy rate in 5 years.

The new setup has a huge task to spread education. Firstly, awareness campaigns should be initiated so that the public, especially from the rural areas, should send both their sons and daughters to schools rather than to work, so that they know the importance of education. Secondly, the root of social and ideological problem is lack of education. People with vested interests target the illiterate for defaming Islam and our society. This happens because people don’t have the capability to distinguish between right and wrong. Moreover, lack of education is also the main cause for the disturbance in the economic sector. As people are not educationally qualified, they are unable to run businesses appropriately. When they face a crisis in their businesses they are forced to shut down because they lack the ability to identify the reasons of loss. In today’s global world, education is required to enhance otherwise we will not be able to promote our industries.

A point to be taken into consideration is that the meaning of literacy gets changed in our country so that the figures could be molested even further. This is done in order to show that the current regime has made landmark achievements in the field of education. Sometimes, they say who can read and write are literate, while at times they say a person who has reached 5th  standard is a literate and once it was also believed that  a person who could calculate is also a literate, everyone knows 2+2=4, how silly ! As I said, 100 % literacy is not a reality but a dream, but those nations succeed who dream. But we can’t go on dreaming, we have to take measures for a Gratis educational system.

  • 2 Abdul Basit Khawaja // May 8, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Its only for illustrative purposes. Education also teaches us to how to analyse a report, if you would have analysed the chart and the article, you would have known that its only for illustrative purposes. Moreover, my sincere apologies for not mentioning.

    dear brother
By keeping 50% of the population illiterate, politicians assure that they will be voted in again and again. If everyone becomes educated, they will start asking for development and progress instead of being satisfied with religion /jirga based appeasement. Not to mention promises like free clothes and food&homes commonly given out during elections.

It is high time that we try to create effective governance at district/zilla level instead of depending on the center for everything. If small villages take pride in educating their children and everyone gets together and does something to make it happen, there is no reason why it should not.

Literacy rate of pakistan is poor coze itz divided into 3 wayz Upper , Middle , Lower.

In my sence education level will be same in all classes not dose dat upper ll be take admission in O level , Lower ll take admission in Govt level schools and Middle will take admission in Private.

My 2nd openion is: The Minister of Education will be ellect from School`s and College Principle,. Not from those persons who can`t know the problem of citizen.

If person will glance on these Ideas My hope is No One ll b illetrate.

If literacy is defined as persons aged 15 and over who can read and write, then the literacy rate of the total population is 49.9%. (Of those who are literate, approx 63% of them are male)
    [2005 estimates]

The UNESCO figures as reported in their official journal on Sunday 19th October 2008 puts the literacy figure at 50%.
According to the recent figures the literacy rate of Pakistan has now reached to 54% [2009 estimates].

According to EFA goals it is necessary to achieve 100% literacy rate up to 2015 in Pakistan. Will it be taken in such a worst atmosphere?
Pakistan needed economical prosperity, the improvement in literacy rate will be seen gradually.

    SALam
My friend s i don t hav much knowledge on the said issue but let me share few views in the same ….
In order to acheive Literacy Rate GOverment have to eliminate this 2 society theory which is PVT and GOV Schools , Coleges and Universities. Why ? ye Because if our GOvernment Eliminate these double standards in our education they can bring a change Gov should tak measures for it Privat Universities are so expensive tat even a middle class person can not attain education tehre
iam a graduate and started my Mba From IQRA university i completed my 8 courses but after that i was not able to give my Fee and as i waz a working student and give most of my money at home i wanted to study in order to b sucessful in my life iam working in a bank but im not able to join any place where i can complete my studies and the courses i want i went To GOVE Universites gav test s but som body asked 1 lakh for aadmission n som one 50000 so brothers what should we the youth of Pakistan having age of 24, havin 3 years of banking experiance , what should v further do????? how can v improv the litracy rate? ??? the standards are double here so MPA and MNA s sons goes TO CBM and poor can not even join GOVErnmentz UNIV so SAD and SHAME of us Atleast GOvernment should TAk measures for those students who are geniune and want to study rather then thoze who r studin in universities jzt for sake of time pas and runing polictics and enjoyin powers of the seats and money of Their Fathers ,,, thanks
