Syed Mustafa Kamal Mayor of Karachi (#57)

The new mayor of Karachi is an unlikely poster child for innovative urban planning. The 36-year-old Syed Mustafa Kamal governs a city that’s more often in the news for religious violence than cosmopolitan ways. But the hard-charging Kamal is looking to change all that. He’s courting foreign investment, encouraging international ties, and boosting the city’s tourism. Kamal isn’t shy about his goals: He has said he wants to turn Karachi into the “next Dubai.” His Green Karachi project aims to plant thousands of trees in the city. No stranger to Karachi’s bare-knuckled politics, Kamal isn’t letting anything stand in the way of his grand plans: He has threatened to arrest anyone who tries to cut down the new saplings.

    The Mayors of the Moment

No city globalizes on its own. But with shrewd investments and smart urban planning, a mayor can help turn a regional player into a global powerhouse. Here’s how three of the world’s top mayors are climbing the ladder:

    ——————————————————————————–

Klaus Wowereit Mayor of Berlin (#17)

The concept of the global city isn’t lost on Klaus Wowereit. Since taking office in 2001, the popular, 55-year-old mayor of Berlin has tied his fate to rebranding the city as a glamorous, artistic model of urban renewal. And Berlin’s reputation has thrived as a vibrant, tolerant, creative metropolis under his watch. Wowereit cites the construction of a gigantic international airport, the successful 2006 World Cup, and a cultural festival called “Asia-Pacific Weeks” as landmark accomplishments. His critics claim that he focuses more on the city’s image than its crumbling infrastructure or budget shortfalls. “We are poor but sexy,” admits Wowereit. A fun fantasy it may be, but Berliners will probably only be willing to play the starving artist for so long.

    ——————————————————————————–

Wang Hongju Mayor of Chongqing (#59)

Think Michael Bloomberg has his hands full? Wang Hongju is mayor of the fastest-growing city on the planet, one whose metropolitan area is already bursting at 32 million—more than the population of Iraq. But Wang isn’t letting China’s urban revolution happen under his feet. He has been known to collect advice from citizens (for cash rewards), from mayors of sister cities such as Toronto, and even from the works of Thomas Friedman. Wang has sought heavy foreign investment, which his administration says has topped a whopping $3 billion in the past five years. In 2005, he claimed his antipoverty programs had helped 3 million Chongqing residents rise out of poverty in the previous eight years. Wang rarely shies from reporters’ questions, even about hot-button topics such as Tibet or SARS. His approach, a stark departure from Communist Chinese officials of old, has made the 63-year-old Wang the face of a new breed of Chinese mayors

There are certain number of people who trying hard to put MUSTAFA KAMAL down. They are jealous with progress of him. Plz note that Karachi city is on number 57 not Mustafa Kamal. We should be proud pf Mustafa kamal regardless of his party MQM. At least there is some one in Pakistan who has been recognized due to his performance. But we guys are pulling his leg. Can’t we see what that person has done in past three years. Please accept his performance and support him. MUSTAFA KAMAL is on number 57 or 2nd, HE was, he is and he will remain number ONE in our HEARTS….

  • 8 Ejaz Khan // Nov 17, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Mr. Altamas Bhai! question is not the number one or number two, we the pakistani are dying with the shame that, we are trying to become champion by fabricating false stories. Why the city govt has sent a wrong press release to media? what was the purpose behind this? who is responsible for spenting millions of rupees on advertisement of this false propeganda. This tactice made our Mustafa Kamal “DO NUMBER” mayor of the world not number two. If you have conscience please analyse the coming result of this false and “GANDI HARKAT”

  • 9 Raheel Ansari // Nov 17, 2008 at 2:43 pm

In response of false and fabricating story about 2nd best mayor of the world, I would refer the verse of Holy Quraan “CHOTON PAR ALLAH KI LAHNAT”.

  • 10 Rehan // Nov 17, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I m sorry dude, but it seems that u r unable to digest mustafa kamal’s effort so far. F**k that 2nd best mayor title! If u got convenience by the efforts of our mayor, u should appreciate him whether he belongs to ur party or he from other side.

Only this thinking can save Pakistan.

  • 11 Raheel Ansari // Nov 18, 2008 at 3:31 pm

What thinking can save pakistan? Try to become champion by fradulent ways, the sun can not be hidden behind the little finger. You please read the response of Foreign Policy Magazine and then discuss on this blog.

  • 12 TANIA S // Nov 18, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Give me a break… Mayor of Lahore is probably more deserving than any mayor in Karachi - its only becoming progressively worse with time - where my office is- in west wharf - one the biggest industrial sites - we don’t have a sewage system. And whats the point of a greener karachi when they cant even CLEAN karachi.

  • 18 Richard Johnson // Nov 22, 2008 at 4:04 pm

What Mustafa Kamal has done to Karachi is yet debatable. The efficiency is counted in terms of VALUE FOR MONEY, and not in terms of accomplishment alone, which is called effectivity. If something could be done in Rs: 1000, and it is done at a cost of Rs: 5000, it is NO ACHIEVEMENT, rather a misuse of resources in an already scarce and deprived conditions, as that of Pakistan. Anyways, leaving this discussion aside, at least for the moment, to avoid unnecessary debate on it, ONE THING IS CERTAIN, and that is, a FALSE propagation of information and any pride, etc based on it. SHAME ON YOU, Mr. Mustafa Kamal - you should literally be ashamed of what you have done by putting your posters all over Karachi, showing your fabricated appreciation by your party chief. Any one knew about it or not, just leave it, but YOU KNEW IT very well that what you are trying to portray is NOT TRUE. If you possess any, any smallest sense of ethical realization, you should boldly come at the front, accept your mistake (due to any reason whatsoever) and at least try to refrain from such negative propaganda and furbish falsehood, only to deceive your ownself.

  • 19 leo // Nov 22, 2008 at 4:17 pm

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE IN OUR COUNTRY
is every think ok in u r country?

  • 20 Israr // Nov 22, 2008 at 8:04 pm

The fabricated story is not strange for me because MQM is famous for such gimmicks. MQM has a track record of creating some issues from time to time because it has no political and ideological foundations. It is basically a cohort of gangsters joined together to grab money from the well off people like gangsters. It has strong links with under world mafia & has close association with Indian agencies.

  • 21 Khan // Nov 23, 2008 at 12:36 am

What can u expect from a bunch of gangsters.

  • 22 Richard Johnson // Nov 24, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Mr Leo, whether everything is fair in any other country or not, is it any justification for any shameful act? Why makes you refrain from calling a spade, a spade? After all, what hampers you from accepting anything which is just TRUE? Strange!…….. isn’t it?

  • 23 leo // Nov 24, 2008 at 11:41 pm

    Somthing very strange indeed
how come suddenly u wake up from u r dreams & start commenting about mayor of karachi?
wat is u r knowledge about my city do u know anything about history of karachi Or pakistan?
    long live pakistan

  • 24 asadullah // Nov 26, 2008 at 11:41 am

there was a time when karachi called the city if light ….do you know what light means…..it was one of the peaceful cities…but after coming MQM in government what happened …..the whole city become the safe place for the killers and siinners…and this was the plan of india to destablise the pakistan so they sent their agents….MQM the killer of ulama, talaba, mazdoor, aur masoom citizen….
my brother be in your sences.

  • 25 leo // Nov 26, 2008 at 2:35 pm

  • 28 A Pakistani // Nov 26, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Personally ever since Mustufa has taken over as city mayor, Pakistani people have seen developments in the length and breadth of this city. From bridges to cleanup drives to traffic police tickets he has done it all. The Mayor who stood in the pouring rain last monsoon season overseeing drainage made sure that this years rains did not bring this city to a standstill. He has in his tenure saved many parks from encroachment.

  • 29 Shahid // Nov 27, 2008 at 11:27 pm

IT IS A TOTALY PREJUDIC. WHY THE PEOPLES OF PAKISTAN EXCEPT URDU SPEAKERS NOT APPRICIATEING THE MUSTAFA KAMAL EFFORTS… THE REASON IS BEHINE IS SO SIMPLE THEY DONT LIKE ANY MOHAJIR GET ANY ACHIVEMENT .SHAME ALL OF THEM AND CURSE TOOO…. THERE THOUGHTS THAT AFTER SHIFTED THE CAPITAL OF PAKISTAN, MOHAJIR WILL BE ISOLATED BUT MUSTAFA KAMAL PROVED THAT MOHAJIR ARE EDUCATED AND GOOD ADMINISTRATOR AMONGS ALL PAKISTANI NATION…. YES BEST QAUID AZAM WAS ALSO MOHAJIR REMEMBER

Foreign Policy a magazine since 1970’s publishes two popular listings:

    1- Mayor of moments
    2- Failed state index

For 2008, they short-listed three mayors and one of them was a Pakistani - Mustafa Kamal.

There’s nothing fake about it! learn to appreciate a pakistani who has actually delivered!

  • 31 Amjad // Dec 5, 2008 at 11:53 am

  • 35 Faraz // Mar 23, 2009 at 3:04 am

Second or 2ndlast, as a Pakistani I am ashamed that we are fighting each other on the basis of ethinicity, political affiliations etc. Mustafa Bhai thank you very much for making my and my family life easier.
